Understanding Earlobe Repair Surgery
Earlobe repair is a surgical procedure that improves the appearance of the ear lobe after changes from the use of gauges, earrings, trauma, or aging.
Ear gauge repair surgery allows you to resume wearing regular earrings, if you choose.
Who is a Good Candidate?
- Patients Seeking Cosmetic Improvement: You are not happy with your earlobes because they are long, flat and deflated and you want to restore a more youthful look.
- Individuals with Split Earlobes: You may have experienced significant splitting due to large gauges or heavy earrings.
- People with Torn Earlobes: Your earlobes have been torn due to accidents, sports injuries, or other trauma.
When can I re-pierce my ears?
The earlobes can be re-pierced 3 months after surgery.
What Is the Procedure Like?
The ear lobe repair procedure at Salmon Creek Plastic Surgery typically begins with a consultation where our Vancouver, WA cosmetic surgeon assesses the condition of the earlobes and discusses your goals.
The actual surgery is usually performed in an outpatient setting in our clinic. It only lasts about one hour. After surgery, you can go home the same day.
During the surgery, we do the following:
- Anesthesia: Local anesthesia is administered to numb the earlobe area. You may also be given a sedative for relaxation.
- Incision: The SCPS surgeon carefully makes an incision around the split or torn area to remove any damaged tissue.
- Closure: The earlobe is then stitched back together using sutures. The goal is to create a smooth, natural appearance with minimal visible scarring.
- Post-operative Care: After the procedure, we will provide specific instructions on how to care for the earlobe during the healing process. About a week after surgery you return to have your stitches removed.
What is the Recovery Process for Earlobe Repair Surgery?
Recovery from ear lobe repair surgery is generally straightforward, but it does require some care and attention. Here’s what to expect:
- Initial Healing: You may experience some swelling, bruising, or mild discomfort in the first few days after surgery. Over-the-counter pain relief can often manage this.
- Activity Limitations: We advise you to avoid strenuous activities, heavy lifting, or swimming for at least two weeks post-surgery to prevent complications.
- Suture Removal: Sutures are typically removed within one to two weeks, depending on the surgeon’s recommendations.
- Follow-Up: A follow-up appointment is often scheduled to ensure proper healing and to address any concerns.
How Long Does Recovery Take?
Overall recovery from ear gauge repair surgery can take about 4 to 6 weeks for the earlobes to fully heal, although significant improvement is usually noticeable immediately. During this time, it is crucial to follow our aftercare instructions, which may include keeping the area clean, applying prescribed ointments, and attending follow-up appointments.
