A forehead lift or “browlift” is a procedure that restores a more youthful, refreshed look to the area above the eyes. The procedure corrects drooping brows and improves the horizontal lines and furrows that can make a person appear angry, sad or tired. Often when patients feel they have sagging upper eyelids, in fact they have a sagging browline. Though no absolute aesthetic ideal exists for every person, typically if one manually raises the eyebrows it becomes clear what a forehead rejuvenation can accomplish.
There are several approaches to lifting the forehead:
The more traditional approach involves making an incision across the top of the scalp that follows a headphone-like pattern, starting at about ear level and running across the top of the forehead and down the other side of the head. Working through the incision, the skin of the forehead is carefully lifted so that the underlying tissue can be removed and the muscles of the forehead can be altered or released.
The scalp is repositioned in an upward direction resulting in elevation of the eyebrows and excess skin at the incision point is trimmed away.
The least invasive approach is a newer technique called the TransBleph Browlift. With this approach, your surgeon performs a brow lift and upper eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty) through a single, upper lid incision. During blepharoplasty, the surgeon makes an incision in the crease of your upper lid and removes excess skin. This same, upper lid incision provides direct access to the brow. To perform a TransBleph browlift, the upper lid incision is advanced (not increased in size) down to the outer portion of the bone above the eye socket, known as the orbital rim. A small anchoring hole is made in the bone. The ENDOTINE TransBleph fixation device is then placed into the hole under the skin. The brow is raised to the desired height and the TransBleph fixation device securely holds the tissue in its new and elevated position during healing. Once healing is complete, the TransBleph fixation device is naturally absorbed by the body.
Another newer technique is the temporal browlift. The temporal browlift is a minimally invasive technique which involves lifting of the brow through a short incision in the temporal hairline and gives a more natural post operative appearance because it mainly lifts the lateral brow.
