A Nose Job Can Be Cosmetic or Reconstructive

What You Need to Know About Rhinoplasty

Rhinoplasty, also known as a nose job, is a surgery that is performed on the nose. It’s usually for the purpose of reshaping or reducing the size of the nose. In most cases, rhinoplasty accompanies reconstruction of the septum, the structure that divides the two sides of the nose. A deviated septum can be present from birth or may occur from an injury to the face. It can result in difficulty breathing and mouth breathing.

Why Would Someone Choose to Have Nose Surgery?

Cosmetic: Most people who are considering nose surgery are looking to improve the overall aesthetic of their face. Often your goal is to work towards a more harmonious appearance of facial features, both on front view and side view. By working with a skilled plastic surgeon to improve their nose shape, we are able better highlight other facial features. Sometimes, chin augmentation may be recommended in addition to nose surgery to improve facial harmony.

Reconstructive: Some people need rhinoplasty because they have had disruption of their normal anatomy. This could be due to trauma, cancer, or an unsatisfactory prior surgery. Reconstructive nasal surgery can allow you to get closer to an ideal nose appearance. Repairing a crooked broken nose can be done in the immediate after injury period, within the first 7-10 days, or at a later date, usually around 1 year after injury.

Functional: Finally, some people choose to have a nose job to correct breathing conditions or other symptoms resulting from a deviated septum.

Am I a Good Candidate for Rhinoplasty?

A good candidate for rhinoplasty should be in good health, have fully matured facial features, and have realistic expectations. We require that patients avoid nicotine use 6 weeks before and after surgery. Your surgeon at Salmon Creek Plastic Surgery will discuss all the components of your rhinoplasty surgery during your consultation from improving the shape of your nose to improving breathing.

What is the Procedure Like?

Rhinoplasty often involves an incision at the base of the nose called the columella, this heals very well and is nearly invisible. The septum is often straightened and used as a graft for shaping the nose. Sometimes ear cartilage is used for shaping the nose and more rarely, rib cartilage can be used. The nasal bones are often broken to straighten the nose. The nasal cartilages are delicately shaped to create an ideal tip appearance and function. An external nasal splint and internal nasal splints are applied to the nose at the end of surgery. The surgery is done in our certified on-site ambulatory surgery center at Salmon Creek Plastic Surgery in Vancouver, WA and you go home after surgery.

How Long Does Recovery From a Nose Job Take?

Generally, you will recover quickly from rhinoplasty, returning to regular activities of daily living within 1-2 weeks. Swelling and bruising usually peak on day three after surgery and are mostly subsided after two weeks. During the first 12 months after rhinoplasty, you will continue to observe gradual refinement and better definition of the nose shape as swelling resolves. Patience is key to the healing journey after rhinoplasty!

Moderate pain is experienced the first few days after surgery. You will be taking over the counter pain medications like Tylenol and Ibuprofen, and may choose to use a few tablets of narcotic medication.

What Are The Risks of Nose Surgery?

While most rhinoplasty is extremely safe, as with any surgery, there are some inherent risks like bleeding, infection, scarring and reaction to the anesthetic.

Risks specific to nose surgery could include changes to your breathing, dissatisfaction with the appearance of your nose, nosebleed, or septal perforation. Sometimes, patients may require a revision rhinoplasty.

How Much Does Rhinoplasty Cost?

Costs for procedures vary depending on the needs of the patient. The cost starts at $11,800 including anesthesia and facility fee. Cosmetic nose jobs are not usually covered by insurance, but facial reconstruction due to injury or illness may be covered. Review your health insurance policy and call your insurance company to learn details of your coverage.
